From the Gaelic, Mac Conraoi, the following names are derived - Conroy, Connery, Conry, Cunree, McConry, MacEnry, McHenry, Mulconry, and King.
The Conroy family is descended from Milesius, King of Spain, through the line of his son Ir. The founder of the family was Cahal McRory O'Connery, King of Connaught in the eleventh century. The ancient name was Cahal and signifies "Beautiful". The possessions of the sept were located in the present county of Carlow.
Another family of the name - The McConroys - were Lords of Dealbh-na-Thire-da-locha, or Delvin of the Land of the Two Lakes, now the barony of Moycullen, situated between Lough Corrib and Lough Lurgan, or the Bay of Galway, in the County of Galway. They also had lands in the Counties of Limerick and Leitrim.
The Conroys, who are of the Dalcassian race of Thomond, are still very numerous in this territory, but they usually translate the name to King from the erroneous belief that the name is Mac-anrigh, or Son of the King. The true Anglicized form of the name is MacConroy.

The most important of these is O'Mulconaire, i.e. descendent of the follower of Conaire, from which O'Mulconry and its abbreviation, Conry, naturally derive, though as we have seen, Conroy is also used by modern descendants of this sept. However should he stated that in the homeland of the O'Mulconaire sept, whose patrimony was the parish Clooncraft in the neighbourhood of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, they are usually called Conry not Conroy. The O'Mulconrys were hereditary poets and chroniclers to the Kings of Connacht, and many such are recorded in the "Annals of Connacht", the "Annals of the Four Masters" etc ., the most notable of whom were Fearfasa O'Mulconry, who was himself one of the Four Masters (whose work was completed in 1636), and Maurice O'Mulconry whose copy of the "Book of Fenagh", made in 1517, is an exceptionally heautiful manuscript. Most Rev. Florence Conry (1561-1629), Archbishop of Tuam, was also of this sept. His name is so spelt in the Franciscan records, but in some other contemporary documents he appears as Conroy, and also as O'Maolconaire. This most distinguisguished Franciscan was associated with the foundation of the Irish College at Louvain, and wrote many important works including a theological treatise in Irish. He was chaplain in the Spanish Armada and to Hugh O'Donnell at his death. Charles O'Mulconry (son of John O'Mulconry, whofoughtin the Cromwellian war and lost his estate in Co. Roscommon) was an ardent Jacobite and was killed in the Battle of theBoyne in 1690. Another John O'Mulconry, the famous Gaelic poet and chronicler, whose family had settled in Ardkyle in Co. Clare, was of this sept. He presided over a school of poets at Ardkyle from about 1440 to 1470. Hardiman's inclusion of the Mulconrys among the Dalcassian septs is an error.
Other Gaelic surnames which are anglicized Conry and Conroy in Connacht are O'Conraoi of Ui Maine or Hy Many, i.e. the territory otherwise known as O'Kelly's Country in East Galway and South Roscommon, and MacConraoi of Moycullen, called by the Four Masters Lord of Delvin of the Two Lakes (viz Lough Corrib and Lough Lurgan - an old name for the Bay of Galway). The "Books of Survey and Distribution", and other seventeenth century records, show that MacConrys or MacConroys were there at that period. Padriac O'Conaire (1883-1928), one of the best known of all the modern writers in Irish, was a Galway man. His statue is to be seen in Eyre Square in Galway City. He spelt his name O'Conaire, though this form is usuallyfound in Munster and anglicized Connery, and is quite distinct from the Galway sept just mentioned. O'Connery is included in Smith's "History of County Waterford" among the principal inhabitants of the county at the end of the sixteenth century.
A further complication is the use of the surname King as a synonym for MacConraoi, and even for O'Conraoi and also for Fhearadhaigh. This arose from the similarity in sound of these Mac names and Mac an Righ: the latter means son of the King, and so became King in English by a process of mistranslation very common in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In fact nearly all the MacConroys of Moycullen use the name King, and in the nineteenth century they called their ancestral seat of Ballymaconry Kingstown. King, of course, is a common English name, and is also the anglicized form of the Gaelic surname O'Cionga or O'Cingeadh (fcrst anglicized O'Kinga), a family which in medieval times were seated on the Island of Inismore in Lough Ree, and were influential in Co. Westmeath up to the end of the sixteenth century.
Statistics of the modern distribution of population indicate that Conrys are found in considerable numbers in Leix and Offaly, as well as Connacht. This might well be expected hecause, in addition to the septs referred to ahove, there was also a not important sept called O'Conratha, alias Mac Conratha, of the same stock as the MacCoughlans of Offaly. Their arms are quite different from those of O'Mulconcy.
In 1868, Coleman, Sarah and their infant son Patrick arrived in the United States and eventually settled in Bellaire, Ohio. He was an iron worker by trade, and a monument to his work is a railroad bridge that runs from Bellaire, Ohio, across the Ohio River to Benwood, West Virginia. He was the construction foreman on the bridge, which is now over one hundred years old. As of 1988, the bridge is still in use and five railroad trains a day, each carrying twenty tons of coal, are moved by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to one of the power plants in the Ohio Valley.
Coleman and Sarah had seven Children:
Patrick, born in 1868, in Ireland
Michael, born in 1871, in West Virginia
John, born in 1874, in West Virginia
Coleman, Jr., born in 1876, in Bellaire, Ohio
Mary, born in 1878, in Bellaire, Ohio
Joseph, born in 1880, in Bellaire, Ohio
Marcus, born in 1883, in Bellaire, Ohio.
Coleman Conroy saved all the extra money he could and brought friends and relatives from Ireland by sending them the passage money. One of his brothers, Patrick, migrated to the south and was said to have fathered sixteen children. No records of this family are known at this time. His other brother, Cornelius, and his wife are buried in Ohio. Most of their children migrated to the Dakotas. Little is known of this family at present. It was said that both Patrick and Cornelius became millionaires.
Of the Coleman Conroy children, two of the sons were bachelors, Coleman Junior, and John. John was said to be the only one in the family with brown eyes and his love of Irish whiskey was legendary. One time, on a visit to his brother, Marcus, in Toledo, Ohio, Jack, as he was mostly known by, made some mulberry wine, corked the jug good and hid it up in the attic. Unbeknownst to Marcus, who was in the process of adding a room up in the attic the jug was sealed behind the walls and in due time ripened and exploded. Of course, Uncle Jack as he was known, didn't get the benefit of his concoction and Marcus had to re-do the wall.
Nothing is known of Coleman's son Patrick. He was a wanederer and it was thought that he migrated west. Also nothing is known at this time of his son Joseph.
Michael was married to a woman named Julia Joyce. He worked as a glassworker and usually was a foreman or superintendent of glass factories. He worked in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and even in California. Not too much is known oh his family. One son, Joseph, died in California during prohibition days from poisoned whiskey. Another son went to Notre Dame University and was on the boxing team. We believe his name Michael. Another son was an airline pilot.
For additional information on the Michael Conroy family Bellaire, OH.
As a child, he was raised by an aunt named Ney or Nay, since his mother was ill. In the 1900 census for Bellaire, OH, there is an Anna Ney listed with her two children living at 3223 Guerensey Street, a few blocks from the Conroy home at 3444 Noble Street. Her age was listed as 62 and she was from Ireland. His formal education was ended with the third grade, at which time, as was customary among the poorer classes, he went to work in the coal mines and later on became a glassworker and worked on the railroad.
At about the age of twelve, he went to work at the Imperial Glass Company in Bellaire where his older brother Mickey was was a foreman. The bond between these two brothers became a lifelong relationship as they worked, visited and corresponded with each other.
Although Marcus was denied further formal education, he could read and write English and was conversant in Gaelic, the language of his parents, Coleman and Sarah. He could also read music and played the banjo and mandolin. He could do any kind of mechanical work such as automobile repairing, carpenter or electrical work, or plumbing. When the children were young, he was the family doctor treating them with home remedies. The only time they went to see a doctor was for something serious like a bad accident or such amenities as tonsil removal. It would be wrong to call him a handy man; he was indeed a practical engineer.
Sometime in the latter part of 1908 or early 1909, Marcus, who was then working at the Libby Glass Company in Toledo, met Margaret Wagner. He stopped in John Wagner's grocery store to buy some chewing tobacco and John's daughter, Margaret, waited on him. Although forbidden by her father to go out with Marcus who was a glassworker (considered by John Wagner to be in the same category as transients or hoboes), Marcus had winning ways and it was to be a lifelong marriage.
They were married on June 30, 1909 by a priest, Father W. A. Harks, and then proceeded to take a three month honeymoon part of which time was spent at Niagara Falls, New York, which was the popular honeymoon resort for newlyweds in the Gaslight era. The primary reason for the long honeymoon was that glassworkers seldom worked in the summer months as the glass oven ran at temperatures of 1700 degrees and there was no air conditioning in those days. During their honeymoon they also managed to visit relatives in Bellaire.
Margaret Angela Wagner was born on November 11,1886. She was the daughter of John Wagner, born in December 1861, in Germany and Louisa Stephan, born (date unknown at this time). She had a sister, Theresa, who was called Tracey, born in May 1885 and a brother, John, born in March 1888. Tracey suffered from epilepsy and passed away on April 29, 1892. Johnnie, as he was known, lived to be 91 years old and died by drowning in the Maumee River.
Louisa Stephan Wagner died in her early twenties, April, 12, 1889, and John Wagner then married his housekeeper, Anna Kaefer, who was born in November, 1876. As a result of this second marriage, they had 6 children:
Martin, born in November, 1895
Leo, born in July 1897
Malcolm and Melvin, twins, born in September, 1898
Catherine, (birth date unknown at this time)
Mary Jane, born 1911.
Margaret Wagner finished the eighth grade and was sent to business school where she learned typing and shorthand. She worked for a time as a milliner in Newhostle's Department Store in Toledo. She was an excellent seamstress and made most of her girl's dresses when they were in school. She also wrote poetry and was an accomplished pianist. She was also an excellent bookkeeper and her bread baking day was like a feast day.
Marcus and Margaret Conroy had ten children:
John Marcus Conroy, born April 3, 1910, Toledo, OH
Helen Louise Conroy, born July 31, 1912, Toledo, OH
Mary Angela Conroy, born May 25, 1914, Toledo, OH

Patricia Rose Conroy, born March 15, 1925, Los Angeles, CA
Don Lee Conroy, born March 1, 1928, Los Angeles, CA.
In the early days of their marriage Marcus bought a house from John Wagner for $ l ,600.00. It was supposed to have been willed to Margaret by her mother, Louisa Stephan Wagner, but John was an astute businessman. When Marcus remodeled the house and sold it for $3,000.00, John Wagner was furious as he didn't share in the profits.
During the winter of 1922 the Marcus Conroy Family moved to California. Marcus was already there working at the Crystallite Glass Company in Vernon, Los Angeles County. Margaret and the six children arrived by train and joined him at a house he had rented in Huntington Park, close to the town of Vernon.
Later on, the family moved to a house on 77th street in Los Angeles, and after a time, they bought a house at 9527 Kalmia Street in Los Angeles, in an area which is now known as Watts. There, the family lived until the Big Earthquake of 1933 struck Los Angeles. The house survived, but since it was in the deepest part of the Great Depression, like a lot of other people at that time, they lost their home.
The family next moved to 7668 Walnut Drive in Los Angeles a few blocks from their former home on 77th Street. Late, the family moved to 1151 West 66th Street in Los Angeles. Here the family lived until World War II. Marcus Conroy passed away on October 18, 1943.
By this time, John, Helen, and Frank were married; Raymond and Harold were in the Army Air Corps; Frank and Don Lee were in the Navy; Mary was a an Immaculate Heart nun; and this left only Margaret and daughter Patricia at home during the war Forced to move into smaller quarters, there was no longer any room for Margaret's prized possession, herpiano. At this time she donated it to the Blessed Sacrament School in Los Angeles where up until a few years ago, it was still being played in the parish hall Margaret Conroy passed away November 23, 1975.
John Marcus Conroy married Magdalene Lucy Schrepfer on May 26,1937. John and Magdalene both sang in their church choir and, in keeping up with his music, John also took piano lessons from Magdalene, and wound up marrying the teacher. John continued his musical career by singing with the Ellis Club, an all male choir in Los Angeles, and also sang on some local radio stations. Later on, he became a piano tuner technician. His main line of work was in the printing business which he entered after leaving high school and The Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles. He worked as a Linotype operator, compositor and proofreader until his retirement about 1978. Harold Conroy met Roma Maxine Gosda at a U.S.O. dance in an outdoor pavillion at Schimmer's Lake in Grand Island, NE on July 25, 1944. As they danced to the band music, lightning struck and the thunderstorm put out all the lights. What could have been a disaster was turned into a romantic evening when the Army trucks were lined up and directed their headlights through the doors of the pavillion, and the young couples continued with the dance.
They continued to see each other nearly every evening after that night and were married on November 15,1944. Three days later, on November 18, 1944, Harold was sent to the South Pacific and was stationed on Tinian Island for the next 14 months. The dropping of the two A-Bombs on Japan quickly ended the conflict.
He returned to Grand Island and learned the electrical wiring trade; taking part in the Rural Electrification Program that brought electricity to America's farmlands in the late 1940's and early 1950's.
Roma Maxine Gosda was born at Grand Island, Nebraska on July 3, 1926. Her father was Albert Arthur Gosda, born January 1,1893 in Grand Island, NE. He passed away on April 9,1975 and is buried at Grand Island, NE. Her mother was Nelda Wilhelmina Busboom, born at Pleasant Dale, NE on February 22, 1907. She passed away May 16, 1977 and is buried at Grand Island, NE.
As a young girl, Roma stayed on the farm and took care of the three younger children. She also prepared and cooked their evening meals. She made many home baked goods and pies for dessert. She would often catch a chicken, butcher it herself, and prepare the evening meal.
Nelda would do the laundry in an old-fashioned tub and like most farm people of that era, would squeeze the clothes out with the old-fashioned hand wringer.
Each year at harvest time, the farmers would band together for the harvest. Whoever was first this season would go to the last of the list for next season. Working together this way farmers had help and in case a storm hit, all crops would be in the barns. When the season ended, the last farmer on the list would host a big celebration.
The hosting family would take a big cattle tank and scrub it clean for the farm men who had worked the harvest. The men would use this for washing up after the harvest and in preparation of the harvest feast. The wives brought their best meals and all the families would gather for the "Harvest Season".
When Roma (Gosda) Conroy was in the eighth grade at her home in Wood River, school was three and a half miles around their island, but only one mile across the river. When the river frozen solid, Nelda Gosda would make sure the children crossed the frozen river safely to and from school. During the depression her father, Albert, couldn't afford the gasoline to drive the children to school every day and trips to town were limited to once a month for supplies. Roma graduated from the eighth grade at Wood River School.
During Christmas time, Albert Gosda would go out along the river and cut down a cedar tree. They would decorate it with strings of popcorn and when completed, would light the candles for a few minutes, observing the old German tradition of Christmas.
In the winter time, when the children had severe colds or the croup, Nelda would make mustard plasters covered with goose lard and turpentine. Placed on the chest of the ailing child, this would "kill the virus or kill the kid".
In the latter part of the depression, when food was scarce, Albert Gosda would take his shotgun and go hunting for pigeons. A dozen or more pigeons with fresh vegetables, home made noodles and dumplings would make a feast for the family, topped off with one of Nelda's chocolate pies covered with whipped cream.
During the summer months, Roma would take turns living with both sets of grandparents. In her ninth grade year, she lived with her grandmother Busboom, as she attended school in Grand Island.
About 1945, during World War II, Albert and Nelda moved into the city of Grand Island. Nelda worked at Four Starr Foods for a while and later worked at the ordnance plant in Grand Island making fuses and helped assemble bombs for the military. After the war, Nelda set up a bakery in the home basement and made pies and baked goods for local restaurants. She was noted for her "Nelda's Pies" and baked goods. Albert Gosda worked at the Feed and Cattle Company in Grand Island.
Children of Albert and Nelda Gosda are:
Roma Maxine Gosda, born July 3, 1926, Grand Island, NE.
Melvin Howard Gosda, born July 7, 1930, Grand Island, NE
Jerome Frederick Gosda, born Jan.15, 1933, Grand Island, NE
Shirley Ann Gosda, born June 12, 1936, Grand Island, NE
Albert Gosda's parents were Frederick Gosda, born Octc 20, 1849 in Germany and Anna Liebbing, born September 1864. He passed away on February 1, 1913 at Grand Island, and she passed away on July 17, 1957 at Grand Island, NE.
She and her husband, Friedrich Gosda, built a log cabin and raised nine children.
Anna Gosda was was known by her relatives as a very strict and straight-laced woman of proper standards of conduct. She believed that people could rise above any adversity, such as welfare or charity programs. People, she felt, were able to work for a living.
After her husband Friedrich passed away, she managed the farm as well as raising her eight remaining children. She was a strong advocate of keeping close-knit family relations and also instilling family pride in the children.
When it came time for get-togethers or family celebrations, parties were held at her home and everyone pitched in to help. Failure to attend or help out would cause a drop in her good graces. She was a firm but loving woman.
Children of Frederick and Anna Gosda were:
Richard Gosda, B. Sept. 24, 1886, D. Apr. 5, 1973
Paula (Gosda) Bieberness, B. Mar. 18, 1888, D. Nov. 26, 1984
Frederick Gosda Jr. B. Aug. 3, 1890
Frieda (Gosda) Vogel, B. Apr. 19, 1896
Albert A. Gosda, B. 1893, D. 1975
Meta (Gosda) Wiegert
Elmer Gosda,s. 1898
Erna (Gosda) Wegner.
Louise also was a woman who did her own things. Empty feed sacks were boiled down until they were bleached and all the dyestuffs removed. From these sacks she would make perfect bed sheets.
She also gardened and, as the food needed pickling or canning, she would carefully put up preserves. She sewed clothing for the needy orphan children at the orphanage in Lincoln, NE. Once a month, she and her husband would deliver a truckload for the children. She was a very charitable lady. No doubt some of her love for others was passed down to her granddaughter, Roma.
Nelda Busboom's parents were Herman C. Busboom, born in 1872 in Illinois. He died in Grand Island NE, in 1979. He married Louise K. Nobbman in 1898 at Lincoln, NE. She was born in 1881 at Lincoln, NE. She died in 1971 at Grand Island, NE.
Children of Herman and Louise Busboom were:
John Busboom, born 190], died 1978
Alvin Busboom, birthdate unknown, died 1988
Nelda Busboom, born 1907, died 1977

Roma Conroy works as bookkeeper for the family electrical business. Harold Conroy owns and operates the Amps Rite Electric Company of Omaha.
When they were first married, there was no television and they did not own a car until after their second child was born. It cost all of $100.00 and when it rained, they had to rush home to put the car in the garage as the fabric roof leaked like a sieve. It was to be 1953 before they could afford a new Chevrolet paying $ 1,900.00 in cash for it. At the time, they felt that they were rich.
Harold had open heart surgery in June 1983. At 66, he was still working at the electrical business, but at a slower pace. He and Roma are looking forward to some leisure years soon.
Harold and Roma have six children, and as Roma puts it, our children attribute this to the "Grass Skirt" made of parachute silk which Harold brought her on his return from the islands.
The children of Harold and Roma Conroy are:

In 1955 when the family moved to Omaha and Phil started kindergarten, he had curly hair and wore thick "coke bottle" glasses. He did Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, caddied, parked cars, and washed dishes. He graduated from high school in 1969 with a Naval ROTC Scholarship to Notre Dame University at South Bend, Indiana.
As a Midshipman First Class, in June 1972 he was ordered to the Gulf of Tonkin (a.k.a. Yankee Station) in Viet Nam for six weeks of training on the USS Midway before returning for his senior year at South Bend.
At this time a request from a Saigon attorney to Roma Conroy made a slight change in his plans. A pending adoption case for an Omaha family had reached a state of stagnation and someone was needed to speed up the bureaucratic delays. Phil took off from Clark Field in the Philippines, to Tan Son Nhut Air Base and spent the next thirty days clearing up the red tape for both countries. As a result, seventeen orphans were permitted to come to the United States bound for New York, Ohio, Iowa and Nebraska. Most of these children are now in college.
Philip Conroy graduated from Notre Dame in 1974 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and a four year commitment to Uncle Sam, but he chose to add on two more years by opting for Naval Aviator Training. Several times in the mid-seventies he visited relatives in California, namely his grandmother, Margaret, and aunts and uncles, Sister Mary, Helen and Jay, Rita, and Don and Dorothe.
After checking out in the Grumman A-6E "Intruder" at Whidbey Island, Washington, he returned to duty on the uSs Midway, now stationed at Yokosuka, Japan. He enjoyed the cuisines of the Far East and Indian Ocean countries and on a port visit to Perth Australia, realized he was missing a "down home, small town girl".
Cathy Layne Muntz was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1953, in Gladewater, Texas. She was working as a nurse in Pensacola, Florida when Phil transferred there in 1979. All the children were born at Clarkson Bishop Memorial Hospital in Omaha. Melissa and Seth have blond hair and blue eyes. Nathan Patrick has red hair and blue eyes.
Marsha and Marty celebrated their twelfth wedding anniverary in 1988.
In October of 1975 she underwent major surgery at Birmingham General Hospital for major heart repairs and two weeks later had additional conduit replacement and ventrical repair in five corrections.
Afterthe operations the Insurance Company, Mutual of Omaha, furnished a corporate jet to take Roma and Ann from the Hospital to Omaha on Christmas Eve, 1975. Her parents Harold and Roma would, however, have to furnish a Medical Doctor to be in attendance at all times during the flight. At this point, Roma contacted the President of the company and asked if her son, James Conroy who is an M.D., could be the doctor in attendance. With the insurance company's O.K., the flight took place.
In her childhood, attending school sometimes became difficult as she spent some time in a wheelchair with attendant oxygen bottle to carry her over the difficult days. However, on June 1, 1981; after years of trial and determination, Ann Marie proudly marched with her graduating class as she received her high school Diploma from the Northwest High School of Omaha.
During the summer she took courses at the University of Nebraska with the hope of becoming a Medical Technician. However, as time and energy made their demands, her health began to deteriorate and doctors advised her to slow down and try a less demanding field. It was then that she switched over to child care and daycare job placement.
She has done volunteer work at Douglas County Hospitals and is involved in a support group for heart and heart bypass patients She also teaches summer Bible School classes for children and belongs to a women's quilting group that makes quilts for third world countries for the World Vision program.
Ann corresponds frequently with other members of the family in various parts of the country. Her lifestyle, though limited, does not prevent her from being "Aunt Ann" to her many nieces and nephews and she lives each day to the fullest as the good Lord will allow.
